The best AI meeting notetakers without a bot in 2026
By Collabute · Published
The short answer
Collabute, Granola and Jamie record meetings from your own device, so no bot ever joins the call. Otter, Fireflies and Fathom are known for their bots, but each now has a bot-free way to record as well. Collabute is the pick if you also want free dictation and decisions turned into tickets, Granola is the best notepad on its own, and Jamie suits in-person meetings and EU hosting.

Why skip the bot
A notetaker bot joins your call as an extra participant. Everyone sees it. On a sales call, an interview or a first meeting with an investor, that can change how people talk, and some companies block bots from their calls entirely.
A bot-free notetaker records the audio on your own computer instead, the same audio you hear. Nothing joins the call. You still need to tell people you are recording where the law or common courtesy asks for it.
Two things to know. First, bot-free recording needs your computer to be in the call, so it can't cover a meeting you don't attend. Second, "no bot" means different things in different apps. Some never use one. Others default to a bot and offer a bot-free option. The table above says which is which.
We make Collabute, so we list it first. Facts about the other apps come from their own websites, checked in November 2026.
1. Collabute: best if you want the meeting to turn into work
Collabute records your meetings on your Mac, including Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, and gives you a transcript with speaker labels. No bot joins, ever.
Where it stands out is after the call. Collabute turns what was decided into a Linear or Jira ticket, posts the update to Slack, and can hand the same brief to a coding agent like Cursor, Claude or Devin. Its MCP server lets Claude, Codex and Cursor look up your meetings once you allow it.
It is also more than a notetaker. Flow dictation into any app is free and unlimited, and Obvee, the voice assistant, does tasks in your browser and Mac apps when you ask out loud.
Price: meeting transcription starts on Lite, $9 a month for 10 meetings. Pro is $29 a month with 100 meetings and 100 minutes of Obvee. Ultra is $99 a month with unlimited meetings. You can try Lite or Pro for $2 for 7 days. See pricing.
Where it is weaker: Collabute is Mac only for now, with Windows in early access and no phone app, so it can't record a phone call or an in-person meeting from your pocket. It also doesn't have a free tier for meetings.
2. Granola: best notepad for meetings
Granola is an AI notepad. You jot rough notes during the call, and Granola fills them in from what was said. Many people prefer this to a full transcript because the notes keep their own structure.
It never uses a bot. You can chat with a meeting or across many, share folders and use templates. It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and Apple Watch, which covers phone calls and in-person meetings. It recently added Voice Typing for dictation into any app, in beta on Mac.
The free plan keeps 30 days of history. Business is $14 a month and adds unlimited history, integrations such as Notion, HubSpot and Zapier, and MCP and API access.
Where it is weaker: Granola is about notes, not about doing the follow-up for you. See Granola alternatives and Collabute vs Granola.
3. Jamie: best for in-person meetings and EU hosting
Jamie runs on your device and never sends a bot. It captures online calls on any platform and in-person meetings from your laptop or phone, and it writes notes and transcripts in more than 99 languages.
Data is hosted in the EU, which matters to many European users.
The free plan gives 10 AI notes a month, with meetings up to 30 minutes. Plus is listed at €21 a month, and Pro at €39 a month billed yearly with unlimited notes.
Where it is weaker: the free plan's 30-minute limit is tight for real meetings, and it has no system-wide dictation.
4. Otter.ai: best for live transcription
Otter is one of the oldest names in meeting transcription. Its notetaker joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet to record and share notes. If you want a bot-free option, the Otter desktop app for Mac and Windows records the meeting from your computer instead.
It is strong at live transcription, has apps on every platform, a Chrome extension, an MCP server and integrations with tools like Salesforce and HubSpot.
The free plan gives 300 minutes a month with a 30-minute cap per conversation. Pro is $16.99 a month, or $8.33 a month billed yearly, with 1,200 minutes and 90 minutes per conversation.
Where it is weaker: the bot is still the default way Otter works, and the free and Pro plans cap your minutes each month. See Otter alternatives and Collabute vs Otter.
5. Fireflies.ai: best for sales calls
Fireflies is built around its notetaker bot, and it shines for people who live on calls: a searchable library, CRM integrations, conversation analytics and an AI assistant across meetings.
For bot-free recording, the Fireflies desktop app captures system audio from your computer, and the Chrome extension can record without the bot. Fireflies notes that some features, such as Sales Assist, still need the bot.
There is a free plan. Pro is about $18 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly.
Where it is weaker: if you rarely run sales calls, much of Fireflies goes unused, and the bot-free modes have fewer features than the bot.
6. Fathom: best free plan
Fathom's free plan has unlimited recordings and transcriptions, instant AI summaries, clips and search across calls. For a free tool, that is a lot.
It records with a bot by default. On the free plan you can choose bot-free capture instead, which is in beta on Mac.
Premium is $20 a month, or $16 a month billed yearly, and adds advanced summaries, AI action items and an assistant you can ask about your calls.
Where it is weaker: bot-free capture is still a beta, so expect rough edges if no-bot is a must.

Questions
- Which AI notetakers never use a bot?
- Collabute, Granola and Jamie record from your own device and never send a bot. Otter, Fireflies and Fathom use a bot by default but each has a bot-free option: Otter's and Fireflies' desktop apps, Fireflies' Chrome extension, and Fathom's bot-free beta on Mac.
- Is bot-free meeting recording legal?
- Recording laws depend on where you and the other people are. Many places require everyone's consent. Bot-free recording doesn't change that, so tell people you are recording.
- What is the cheapest bot-free meeting transcription?
- Collabute Lite is $9 a month for 10 bot-free meetings, and its Flow dictation is free. Granola's free plan keeps 30 days of history, and Fathom's free plan is unlimited but its bot-free mode is in beta.
- Can a bot-free notetaker record a meeting I don't join?
- No. Bot-free tools record what your own computer or phone hears, so you need to be in the call. Bots can join meetings without you.
- Does Collabute work for in-person meetings?
- Collabute records on your Mac, so it can capture what your Mac hears. It has no phone app yet, so for meetings away from your laptop, Granola or Jamie are better picks.
